Profile
Dr. Alan Mendelsohn is a pioneer of laser cataract surgery and is recognized by physicians as a preeminent expert in eye laser surgery. Laser cataract surgery provides far better visual results and safety compared to traditional cataract surgery. A laser can now perform 90 percent of the procedure flawlessly in 30 seconds. This painless procedure takes only five minutes from start to finish, including the implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL). There are no shots, no stitches, nor patches. The patient can resume normal activities the next day, including driving, working, and exercising. The quality of vision is outstanding for driving, working on a computer, and reading, including all the focal lengths in between.
For decades, South Florida physicians have called Dr. Mendelsohn “the physician’s physician.” He has had the honor and privilege to serve as the ophthalmologist to several hundred doctors in South Florida. Additionally, he has physicians, including fellow ophthalmologists, who come state-wide to seek his care at Eye Surgeons & Consultants, especially for laser cataract surgery and laser glaucoma surgery.
Dr. Mendelsohn has made Eye Surgeons & Consultants his practice for the past 20 years. This year, the Sun-Sentinel selected Eye Surgeons & Consultants as “South Florida’s Best Eye Surgery” Team for 2026.
Dr. Mendelsohn’s surgical volume has increased significantly over time, driven largely by patient referrals and referrals from fellow healthcare professionals. To date, Dr. Mendelsohn has performed over 30,000 cataract surgeries with extremely pleased patients who have stellar visual outcomes. More than 200 physicians and their family members have trusted Dr. Mendelsohn to perform their cataract surgery on their own eyes, standing as a meaningful professional endorsement of his surgical skills and quality of care.
Since 2016, Dr. Mendelsohn’s surgical practice has been devoted exclusively to cataract surgery. Almost every comprehensive ophthalmologist does a multitude of different types of eye surgeries, totally unrelated to cataracts. Dr. Mendelsohn has made laser cataract surgery his exclusive surgical focus in the past decade, thereby performing superb, meticulous, cataract surgery with fantastic visual outcomes. His surgical results remain consistently excellent, leading to a continued increase in both patient and physician referrals.
