Still at loose ends for Labor Day weekend? Point the car south. Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key is giving Miamians one last excuse to stretch out summer with a weekend of live music, waterfront festivities, pool time, and fireworks, all without getting on a plane. Friday night kicks things off with First Friday on the Promenade, an open-air marina party featuring live music from Reggae Lou and the Kind Budz, followed by an after-party at Angler & Ale.

On Saturday, the resort turns its attention to Heroes Salute, Hawks Cay’s annual tribute to active-duty military, veterans, law enforcement, firefighters, and EMS personnel. The day starts with the Heroes Salute 5K Run/Walk at 7 a.m. and a family-friendly Touch-a-Truck experience, then culminates on Oasis Cay Lawn with the Heroes Salute Tribute, live music from the Gabriel Key Band, and fireworks over the water at 10 p.m. The 5K, First Friday, and Touch-a-Truck are open to the public, and race registration is limited to 200 participants.

Better yet, there’s still an incentive to make a weekend of it. Florida residents can receive up to 20 percent off accommodations plus 20 percent off dining with valid Florida ID, while active and retired military members, law enforcement, firefighters, and EMS personnel are eligible for 20 percent off the resort’s Best Flexible Rate and 20 percent off dining. So if your Labor Day calendar is looking empty, Duck Key might be calling.
