Colombian-born sisters Catalina and Claudia Pieschacon conjure up creative eye candy, but these aren’t your average sweet trinkets. Using their hands to mold polymer clay into bejeweled pendants, rings and bracelets, the dynamic duo is on their way to building—or rather, baking—a mini jewelry empire that extends from Miami to Monaco, with their audacious and authentic line, Cleo & Cat.
Founded just over a year ago at Claudia’s kitchen table in Parkland, Florida, Cleo & Cat caters to “strong, independent, sophisticated, spontaneous women who aren’t afraid to express themselves,” a portrait that also happens to paint the two sisters perfectly. The concept came about as Claudia was playing with some polymer clay that her son was using for a project. She started molding the clay into whimsical rings, which were inspired from a recent trip to Paris where she saw lots of ladies wearing bold statement jewels. The next day, she wore one to Village of Merrick Park, putting the others in her bag. Immediately, she was approached by inquisitive, style-setting women, and sold six in one day.
Today, the rings that launched the line are the best sellers, along with the three-inch cuffs made of black and colored clay, which are sold at boutiques from Biscayne Blvd. to Worth Ave. and even as far as Australia and Japan. “Our collections [Ocean, Sand and Nocturnal] have a fashion-forward edge while maintaining a classic look that brings you back to the Old World,” says Catalina, a former designer for Ralph Lauren’s home furnishings line. “Our pieces can be simple and modern, while others have a vintage appeal.” After shaping a piece and setting its semi-precious stones, they cure the 50 designs they make each week in a small conventional oven at 300 degrees. Then, it’s time to dry the designs in Claudia’s backyard and ship them out to retailers. “We are inspired by everything in our exterior world, from a simple detail of a flower to everything that goes on in fashion today,” she continues. “It’s a natural organic process for us. We don’t rely on sketches, but simply let our hands express our spontaneous ideas.” The productive pair claims their minds are so connected that sometimes they easily forget who designed what piece. “I think that we each bring our design experience to the table, Claudia as an artist and sculptor for many years and me as a textile designer,” says Catalina. “Claudia is great at making interesting shapes, while I like to focus on the details and texture of each piece.”
Cleo & Cat’s current collections of hot contents, which all fall under the $500 mark, are making the rounds on the trade show circuit, and their wearable art just got picked up by Nordstrom and will be featured at the Henri Bendel trunk show this month.
“We want women to feel beautiful and unique when wearing our pieces,” Catalina says. “Our jewelry allows women to feel that they can stand out from anyone else at a party. Wearing a piece from our collection is like wearing a piece of art, specially handcrafted for them.” The twosome—who share a penchant for strong female designers like Diane von Furstenberg and Stella McCartney—urge other up-and-coming entrepreneurs to believe and trust in their passion. “And everything else will fall into place,” reassures Claudia.
