Mom to Isaiah 6, Mason, 4, and Zoe, 3
Occupation: Director of Family Operations, chef, P.E. teacher, taxi driver, entertainer, housekeeper, corrections officer—you name it!
How they make it fun: Each day we try to choose a different activity. Whether it’s riding bikes, dancing to loud music, jumping on the trampoline, swimming or going to the beach, we are determined to enjoy our day to the fullest!
Pushover or a disciplinarian? A disciplinarian when it calls for it. I feel that discipline is necessary for teaching our children the morals and values that are important in our home. And with three small children, we would have a three-ring circus on a daily basis if we didn’t set some ground rules! However, there is nothing better than the giggles of children, and I think kids should be kids and allowed to enjoy themselves as well.
What do you do for yourself during “me time” to ensure you stay sane and looking and feeling good? Nothing beats putting in my iPod headphones and heading to the gym. But I am also writing a series of children’s books inspired by my own children. The writing not only allows me to laugh and reflect on some of the amazing experiences we have shared, but it gives me an opportunity to be creative and express myself.
Why do you think it’s important that, as a mother, you continue to pursue your personal interests and activities? As women, we wear many hats. We are mothers. We are wives. We are teachers. We are leaders. But at the end of the day, I’m still Katina, and it is important that I maintain that sense of self.
What do you think is the most important quality you can instill in your children? Faith. Faith in God, faith in family, faith in themselves. I think if they carry with them that confidence and trust in some of the most important aspects of life, then I have served my purpose.
From the mouths of babes: Last August I had just finished my annual “Camp Katina—Cartwheels to Character” program that we run though the Jason Taylor Foundation for underserved girls. My kids spent some time at the camp and saw me teaching the girls some of my old gymnastics moves. A few weeks later we were all watching the movie The Incredibles and Mrs. Incredible did a back flip from one high-rise to the next. Isaiah screamed out, “My Mommy can do that!” It’s nice to know that my children still see me as a superhero.
